UBS, the Swiss investment bank, has announced the appointment of Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government. Sir David joins UBS as a senior scientific adviser, based in London.

Lord Browne, former chairman of UK oil and gas giant BP, has joined the advisory board of Sustainable Forestry Management, a Bermuda-based carbon trader focused on forestry credits.

Green campaign group Friends of the Earth has appointed Andy Atkins as its new executive director to replace Tony Juniper. Atkins will leave his current post as policy and campaigns director at development charity Tearfund to join Friends of the Earth in late June, before taking the reins from Juniper later in the summer.

WWF, the environmental NGO, has announced the appointment of Ed Smith as its new chair. He succeeds Christopher Ward, who retires in June. Smith joins WWF after a career as an accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK and abroad. He holds a number of board level roles in higher education and research organisations.

Investors’ Circle, a network of individual and institutional investors focused on sustainable business practices, has appointed Karyn Barsa to the newly created position of president. Barsa will have overall management responsibility for operations at Investors’ Circle.

Lynette Thorstensen has joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development as communications director. She was previously head of sustainable business practices at Insurance Australia Group.

The Rezidor Hotel Group has appointed Catherine Rubbens as director for its social and environmental affairs. Before appointment at Rezidor, Rubbens was director of products and services for CSR Europe, the European business network for corporate social responsibility. She also served recently with Abbott, a global healthcare company, as divisional vice-president for global citizenship and policy.

The Association for the Study and Development of Community, a research and development organisation for community capacity building, has appointed Ricardo Millett as a principal associate.

Ed Gillespie, co-founder of Futerra Sustainability Communications, has returned as creative director after taking a year out to travel round the world without the use of flight.

The MasterCard Foundation has appointed Reeta Roy as president and chief executive. Her previous role was vice-president for global citizenship and policy at multinational pharmaceutical giant Abbott Laboratories.

The UN Environment Programme and California State University have appointed Jeff Price as senior fellow for climate change and biodiversity at the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge, UK.

Sir Bert Massie has been appointed as the new commissioner of the Compact, the agreement defining UK government’s responsibilities for dealing with charity and voluntary groups.
