Drugs giant GlaxoSmithKline has appointed James Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation Europe and Asia, as a non-executive director. Murdoch, son of News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch, will become a member of GSK’s corporate responsibility committee when he joins the board in May.

Meanwhile, BSkyB, the UK broadcaster 40% owned by News Corporation, has promoted Lucy Carver to succeed Ben Stimson as director of its sustainability efforts, called the Bigger Picture. Stimson is leaving to take up a senior management position at John Lewis, the retailer.

The Global Business Coalition on HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria has appointed John Tedstrom as its new president and chief executive. He succeeds Richard Holbrooke, who has left the coalition to become US president Barack Obama’s envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Independent planning consultancy DPP has appointed Sunil Shah to its sustainability and environmental practice. She is the former head of sustainability at global engineering and consulting firm Jacobs Engineering Group.

Henderson Global Investors has appointed Gwen Ruta to the advisory committee for its sustainable and responsible investment team. Ruta is vice-president for corporate partnerships at US non-profit group Environmental Defense Fund.

The UK’s Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has appointed its first head of sustainability, Arlette Anderson.

Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based airline, has appointed Linden Coppell as its first manager for environmental affairs. She joins from Cathay Pacific Airways, where she was environmental manager for five years.

Toyota GB has appointed Francesco Mereu as director with responsibility for human resources, corporate social responsibility and environmental strategy. He joins from the human resources division of Toyota Motor Europe.

Clear Standards, a carbon management consultancy, has appointed Betsy Atkins to its board. She currently serves on the board of SunPower too.
