Cost, efficiency and environmental savings associated with corporate water stewardship are now crystal clear.

Ethical Corporation’s brand new report ‘Unlocking the Profit in Water Savings, 2nd Edition’ [http://www.ethicalcorporationinstitute.com/reports/water/] reveals how leading companies have designed their water management strategy, and how water security helps business flow smoothly.

A key concern

52% of the 96 sustainability professionals surveyed by Ethical Corporation for this 2010 report rank water stewardship as one of their top five responsible business concerns.

99% of respondents believe that water will become more of a priority for businesses in the next five to ten years.

Corporate solutions to water challenges

34% primarily address water management through reduced use and increased efficiency. This focus is no surprise given its potential for massive cost savings.

The report dives into specific water efficiency measures for various companies, and details the associated returns on investment.

The measures that have the largest effect on the companies’ water use and costs are mainly recycling or reusing water, measure and report on water use and use technical solutions to increase the water efficiency.

For example, Whitbread has implemented aerated showerheads, dual-flush toilets, sensors on urinals and water recycling which costs £93,000 and £80,000 annually, but saves them £350,000 annually.

Approaches depend on industry and industry needs, with one mining company focusing on developing and implementing closed water circuits and companies using agricultural products focusing on efficiency in irrigation.
