Press Release: Market Access USA 2010

PHILADELPHIA Todays pharmaceutical companies face an unprecedented challenge of getting drugs to market and maintaining market share once there.

In the US, faster uptake of generics, fewer medicines in the pipeline, and increasing FDA restrictions make obtaining and sustaining market access difficult. In Europe, companies must negotiate reimbursement dossiers, cost-effectiveness studies, decentralized health authorities, and post-launch observational research. And in emerging markets, they face variable federal and regional regulations, as well as complicated relationships with distributors and retailers.

Add to this the specter of impending health reform in the US, which will greatly influence risk regulations and payer relations, and it becomes clear why Market Access is the buzz word in todays pharmaceutical industry. Much of big pharma has begun to rearrange their strategic management teams to make room for this new discipline, and the idea of implementing a dedicated market access group is quickly gaining traction. The long-term goals of such restructuring are manifold: to better synchronize internal processes so that R&D, marketing, and regulatory silos function harmoniously; to identify the key factors that influence a drugs pricing and reimbursement level; to enhance payer relations; to improve risk evaluation and mitigation strategies; and so on.

Of course, many of these goals are yet to be realized. The short-term reality is that pharma companies are still trying to wrap their heads around what effective Market Access strategies entail and whos best qualified to implement them. Toward this end, eyeforpharma has organized the first ever Market Access USA conference, a senior-level event to be held in Philadelphia June 2nd and 3rd. Themes to be explored at the conference range from strategic overviews of market access to payer relations, internal organizational structure, and health reform survival guides.
