Meet the speakers - eyeforpharma West 2001 e-R&D from Strategy to Implementation

Meet a few of the many exciting and informative speakers slated for eyeforpharma West 2001 e-R&D from Strategy to Implementation:

Partnering and outsourcing in R&D
Lee Babiss, Vice President Preclinical Research and Development, Hoffman-LaRoche will present a talk entitled Partnering and outsourcing in R&D.

Babiss was appointed Vice President of Preclinical Research and Development for Hoffman La-Roche in September 1998. His responsibilities include developing and directing research strategy and serving as a member of the Pharma Leadership Board, International Research Executive and the Global Genetics Board at Roche.

Before going to Roche, Babiss served as Vice President of Biological Sciences and Genetics at Glaxo Wellcome. As a member of the U.S. Research Senior Management Team, Babiss participated in formulating the company's U.S. research strategy. Babiss also worked to create the Glaxo Wellcome Corporate Genetic Strategy, which led to the creation of the company's Genetics Division.

Pharmaceutical R&D in the 21st Century: Surviving in the e-business environment
Claudio Spiguel, Vice President Commercial Information Management, AstraZeneca will present a talk entitled Pharmaceutical R&D in the 21st Century: Surviving in the e-business environment.

In his current position, Spiguel is responsible for the strategic definition, sizing and prioritization of the commercial investment in information technology and systems, as well as knowledge management for AstraZeneca's U.S. pharmaceutical business.

Spiguel also serves as PhRMA (Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America) Information Management Liaison to the FDA, with particular focus on the information management aspects of the FDA Modernization Act of 1997. He is chairperson of the PhRMA Information Management Policy and Affairs Coordinating Committee and co-chairperson of the FDA Information Management Advisory Board.

One step further: patenting in bioinformatics
Teresa Welch, a partner in Michael Best & Friedrich LLP's Madison, Wisconsin office, will present a talk entitled One step further: patenting in bioinformatics.

Welch's practice focuses on intellectual property, including all aspects of practice in the areas of patent, copyright and trademark law. She serves as patent counsel for a research pharmaceutical company and a growing biologics company, and works extensively with the patent and technology transfer offices of many universities.

Her patent practice includes drafting and prosecution of patent applications, procurement of worldwide patent rights, and counseling and negotiating licensing and distribution agreements, as well as product development counseling. Most of her patent work involves medical and pharmaceutical applications of compounds, compositions and biologic species.

Welch also is an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School, teaching patent law.
