e-R&D - From strategy to implementation

The eyeforpharma West 2001 conference is the sixth event in the global series of eyeforpharma shows, and the theme of this year's event is 'e-R&D from Strategy to Implementation'.

The conference will run over 3 days and examine key issues of e-business and information technologies in relation to R&D, affecting the pharmaceutical and biotech worlds. As Rene Ziegler, Head of Research Information Management at Novartis Pharma said, "e-research (the term) may be a fad, but the paradigm is a factor and skillful implementation will be vital for the future".

Issues to be addressed at this American conference include the intellectual property and security issues of trading research knowledge online; how to use strategic information management to co-ordinate flexible global alliances in clinical projects and pharmacogenomics; the best strategies for developing profitable e-partnerships; and the important problem of how to manage the pace of IT change and the recruitment and retention of informatics professionals.

Leading figures of the pharmaceutical and biotech industries will be giving presentations at the event, including Dr. Jonathan White, Vice-President, Worldwide Enterprise Informatics at Pfizer, Dr. Les Hudson, Senior Vice-President, Head of Emerging Technologies, Pharmacia, and Roy Whitfield, CEO, Incyte Genomics.

Rapidly changing technology and advances have changed the field of drug discovery forever. Ten years ago, no one could have dreamed of the role genomics would play in understanding human disease and speeding drug development, said Whitfield. As we look to the future, the continuing convergence of technology and biology can only yield greater gains for mankind.

Twelve executive case studies are featured in the conference program, providing delegates with a unique insight into how major pharmaceutical companies, including GlaxoSmithKline and Aventis, are addressing the challenges of e-business and new technology.

Delegates will be able to take part in workshops on the final day of the eyeforpharma (www.eyeforpharma.com) event. In addition, a highly focused exhibition will run alongside the conference enabling delegates to meet designers, consultants and suppliers of the latest e-R&D technology and network with their contemporaries from America and Europe.
