The bmi group of airlines today announced that David Bryon has been appointed managing director of bmibaby, the low cost arm of the bmi group.

David, 38, has been with the bmi group for over four years, joining the company in 2000 to manage its internet strategy.

In 2002 he formed part of the core senior management team that set up bmibaby. As commercial director of bmibaby since December 2003, David has helped build the airline to become the second largest low cost airline in the UK carrying over 3 million passengers a year.

Nigel Turner, chief executive, bmi group, welcomed David's appointment:

"After conducting a comprehensive external search of the market place I am delighted that we were able to conclude that David was the best candidate to drive the bmibaby business forward.

"Since David joined bmi he has been a important member of the management team, most recently as one of the key participants in the birth and development of bmibaby. We look forward to David building on this success and taking bmibaby forward over the next few years."

Before joining bmi David spent ten years at Liverpool University completing a degree, Ph.D. doctorate, and working on various research projects revolving around the early evolution of the Internet. In 1996 he moved to America to work as a Director of Web Technology.

In addition to this work he also has hosted a talk show on American cable TV and has written a weekly newspaper humour column.

His appointment is with immediate effect.
