A missed opportunity? Parcel lockers could help American retailers

Consumer survey finds parcel lockers are attractive to US consumers, but underutilised today

An online survey of 2,000 US consumers found that while only 12% of Americans retrieved a package from a networked parcel locker over the last year, 77% would consider using one.

Additionally, 53% said that a convenient location would motivate them to utilise lockers and 40% if it meant they could avoid queues at pick up locations.

There is then a considerable gap in deployment and usage, with opportunity for retailers and shipping firms to reduce costs and increase customer interaction through the deployment of lockers throughout the country.

These lockers should have dual functionality as return locations as well says the research, as 76% would use a smart locker to process a return.

Maximising this second potential would further enhance the economies of scale and possible cost savings through aggregating delivery and pick-up locations.
