46% of businesses looking to engage in SDGs

We've just published our inaugural State of Responsible Business report. The 53-page report features insight from 2,045 members of the Ethical Corporation community about their work, issues and goals for 2016 and beyond.

Chapter 6 features responses and analysis on the impact of the global goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.

42% of all respondents stated their organisation will be engaging in the SDGs - rising to 46% when focusing on corporate respondents only. One would have assumed a higher percentage of businesses looking to engage in the SDGs, considering Governments will be looking to corporations to assist in help achieve the goals.

The highest rates of engagement were reported by respondents from Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The lowest levels of engagement appear to be in North America, with only 37% of respondents (from both all respondents
and corporate-only respondents) saying their organisation was looking to engage in the global goals.

We then asked those who had responded Yes to identify the specific goals they are engaging in. Among our corporate respondents, the following were the most cited:

  • SDG 13: Climate action (63%)

  • SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth (52%)

  • SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production (51%)

This chapter goes on to highlight which SDGs have the highest level of engagement by region, a full chart on all 17 SDGs and level of engagement plus there's feedback on whether #COP21 delivered the agreement needed to address climate change which is then analysed by region and industry.

We will be engaging businesses at our upcoming Responsible Business Summit on their work and ideas around incorporating the SDGs into business strategy. Hopefully we'll see increased engagement at the event and in our 2017 State of Responsible Business report.
