Make UK calls for a taskforce to examine supply chain resilience due to reshoring companies

Nearly 75% of companies have increased their number of British suppliers in the past two years.

Make UK, the British manufacturing trade association, is calling for a cross-industry and government taskforce to be established, in hopes of examining the UK’s current and future supply chain resilience.

In Make UK’s survey, questioning 132 companies, nearly 50% of respondents said they intended to boost their UK supply base further within the next two years, and more than 10% said they intended to reduce their reliance on Asia-based suppliers.

As well as the impact of COVID-19 on the global supply chain, manufacturers are also increasingly facing more recent problems associated with increased energy, transport and raw material costs.

Increasingly, companies are moving from a just-in-time approach to a just-in-case strategy, relying on a broader supplier base and more localised sourcing.
