France may reduce its reliance on nuclear energy from 75 percent of its electricity production to 50 percent, French Radio station RFI reported.

The announcement was made this week by French Environment and Energy Minister Ségolène Royal’s during his presentation of the energy bill.

At the same time, the country plans to invest up to 10 billion euros to boost investment in renewable energy and cut its oil and gas costs, Royal said. Amendments are expected from both left and right when the bill goes to parliament in October.
