"All companies, large and small, are vulnerable to corruption, and the potential costs when they fail to combat corruption effectively in all its forms are considerable."

Toronto, May 10, 2016

The Canadian chapter of the United Nations Global Compact (GCNC), the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, has put together an e-Book, Designing an Anti-Corruption Program: A Guide for Canadian Businesses to aid Canadian companies in their efforts to develop internal compliance programs and controls. The e-book will be launched on May 10th, 2016 during Transparency International’s 6th Annual Day of Dialogue: A Spotlight on Corruption.

All companies are vulnerable to corruption, and when they fail to effectively combat it, in all its forms, the potential costs are considerable. The rapid development of rules of corporate governance in Canada and around the world is prompting companies to incorporate anti-corruption measures as part of their efforts to stay compliant with laws and manage risks.

Based on this, the resource guide consists of nine chapters ranging from jurisdictional scope, to risks assessments, to tone at the top, all written by prominent business leaders and industry experts who represent a range of industries and sectors - Davies Ward Vineberg & Phillips LLP, McCarthy Tetrault, Barrick Gold, Deloitte LLP, Pohlmann & Co., BDO Consulting, PwC, Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), Ernst & Young.

The Foreword for the eBook has been written by Ms. Huguette Labelle, Former Chair of the Board of Directors, Transparency International wherein she states “overcoming corruption is a worldwide challenge and confronting them requires dedication, persistent effort, and a shared commitment by Governments, businesses, and civil society organizations”.

According to Helle Bank Jorgensen, President of the Global Compact Network Canada, “Companies should use this e-book as a part of their efforts to promote corporate sustainability, mitigate reputational risks, and protect the interests of stakeholders”.

Following the launch of the eBook, the GCNC will be hosting a series of workshops focused on the various chapters of the e-book to spread awareness and shed light on anti-corruption efforts. The Network is also already on its way to publish a second set of chapters for the eBook, which explore how to do business in different regions of the world while tackling corruption challenges.
