Target responds to Walmart by expanding same-day delivery options

Target same-day delivery to go almost nationwide in the US for a fee of $9.99

In the race to secure e-commerce customers, Target has now opened same day delivery up to customers in 47 states. The service is available across a selection of the company’s 65,000 online items and same-day delivery is to be handled largely through Shipt, a start-up acquired by Target in 2017 for $550 million.

Target is hoping that this will give it a competitive edge against Walmart, which is still working to build up next day delivery, as well as Amazon, which does offer same-day delivery in some markets for select items.

Although customers don’t require a Shipt account to access the service, they will have to pay a flat rate of $9.99 for same-day delivery. Alternatively, they can choose to enter the subscription service of Shipt for $49 through a deal on Target’s website or sign up to a free four-week trial to Shipt, which Target hopes will increase stickiness to the Target brand.
