Asia's supply chain crown slipping? UPS, Ryder results; XPO purchase; L'Oreal supply chain deal

In addition to a number of financial results that we have reported on below, I wanted to draw your attention to the results of a survey we recently conducted into the Hi-Tech and Electronics Supply Chain Industry in Asia – specifically we wanted to find whether the region was still considered to be the most competitive. The results of the survey showed that one third of manufacturer respondents felt Asia was losing its supply chain competitiveness, which is a significant proportion. We will monitor this trend over the course of the next 12 months.

Featured Content:Is Asia Losing Its Competitiveness?

The eyefortransport report was compiled using the responses of 230 hi-tech supply chain and logistics executives that work directly with or in the Asia Pacific region. The report asks some important questions regarding the changing dynamics of the APAC region, and challenges respondents to question whether Asia has lost its competitiveness – as an emerging market, manufacturing hub, consumer base, innovation center etc.

While the answer to the question for most is ‘No’, the report reveals some interesting  figures:

  • 1/3 of manufacturer respondents felt Asia was losing its competitiveness
  • 43.4% thought it was losing its competitiveness because of increased costs
  • 54.4% point out that Asia still has a growing consumer base like nowhere else in the world

‘Clearly the dynamics of Asia’s economy are changing with positive and negative effects. This is especially the case in the hi-tech industry where despite rising costs, opportunities in such areas as eCommerce, aftermarket services and home delivery look to be on the rise.’  said Haley Garner, Research Director at eyefortransport. ‘The key will be to see whether the region’s market potential can out-strip rising costs.’
