Big Y Foods building 425,000-sq-ft distribution centre
New facility is expected to open in 2020 and is located next to its corporate headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts
The new facility, which will measure 425,000 square feet will have 53 dock doors and offer more than double the current space of Big Y Foods’ current largest warehouse.
The estimated cost for the distribution centre is $46 million and Big Y Foods expects that it will be finished in 2020 with the aim of supporting the company’s distribution capabilities for the next 20 years.
Core to the capability upgrade will be an increase in refrigeration systems for fresh goods storage, with this space being at a particular premium in the current industrial property market.
The centre is located next to the company’s headquarters on Roosevelt Ave. in Springfield Massachusetts on land bought in the mid-1990s and which was being utilised for employee parking.
The new distribution center will employ 124 people, according to Big Y. The company’s total employment, full- and part-time, is about 11,000.
"It's a great location and a great hub for us," said Big Y President and CEO Charlies D’Amour D'Amour, with the facility providing capacity for "another 20-30 supermarkets”.
