DHL Global Forwarding Inaugurates New Freight Centre in Illinois, US

DHL Global Forwarding announced that it has completed the construction of its new $35m, 491,000 sq m air export gateway facility in Chicago, US.

Located in the Chicago O'Hare International Airport's cargo zone, the three-storied facility is the largest air export gateway of the DHL unit.

The facility has been designed as a bonded Container Freight Station (CFS), which indicates it to be a location selected by carriers to receive cargo to be loaded into containers. It has around 491,000ft2 of office and warehouse space and has multiple certifications indicating it to offer ample protection against cargo theft.

The facility houses two temperature controlled chambers (+15° to +25°C and +2° to +8°C) that together measure close to 10,000ft2 and one 999ft2 ambient receiving area. The chambers offer the advantage of variable temperature which facilitates processing of any pharmaceutical, biotech or medical devices that requires temperature-controlled environment and two dedicated truck docks.

The new Chicago facility is a Certified Life Sciences Station to support DHL's THERMONET solution for temperature controlled air freight transportation.

THERMONET uses solutions like the "Life Track" IT platform and in-transit temperature data and monitoring, which facilitates better monitoring and allows visibility for life science and healthcare products.

Besides environment-friendly features like energy-efficient lighting fixtures, high efficiency water fixtures, and construction using low emitting indoor air contaminants, the facility also offers the benefits of landscaping with native, drought-tolerant plants, bicycle storage, preferred parking for carpool/vanpool vehicles and for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, DHL informed.

City of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said: "This new DHL Global Forwarding building is a testament to Chicago's burgeoning growth, and can offer local businesses of all sizes a gateway to trade expansion within the U.S. and abroad."
