Abengoa completes first solar tower receiver in South Africa

Last week Seville-based CSP developer Abengoa completed the first solar tower receiver structure in South Africa. The structure is part of the 50MW Khi Solar One plant in the Northern Cape region.

The 50Mw Khi Solar One plant in South Africa has gotten closer to the finish line with the completion of its solar tower receiver this week. According to its developers, Abengoa Solar, this tower will use higher temperatures and a dry cooling system making it at the cutting edge of technological CSP advances.

According to the CSP Today Global Tracker, Abengoa is also developing a plant with parabolic trough technology named Kaxy Solar One. This one will be twice as powerful, being built to generate 100MW of power.

Both projects will be connected to the grid through a power purchase agreement (PPA) that Abengoa signed with state utility Eskom as part of the Department of Energy's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP).

This October the Department of Energy will announce the preferred bidders for the third window, in which the local content requirements have raised up to 45%. Finding local partners in this market is a clear challenge that will need to be overcome by any developer to win further windows in South Africa.

Michael Geyer and Craig Windram, senior business development executives from Abengoa Solar, will be sharing their expertise in CSP markets at CSP Today Sevilla 2013 this November. They will be joined by other leading developers such as ACWA Power and Acciona, who are all active in the South African solar market.
