Whyalla City plans a solar thermal energy storage plant

The Council of the City Whyalla, a local government area in South Australia, hopes to build a solar thermal energy storage plant. It would be the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

In a report by ABC News, Deputy Mayor Eddie Hughes said the private sector will fund part of it and the council hopes the Federal Government will put in $100 million. He added that in case funding goes ahead, construction will begin at the end of the year.

Also, in a meeting of the Council, it was shared that the consortium that has put in a full submission for renewable energy funding for a solar thermal project in Whyalla, had been successful. Initially, Whyalla was competing against another ‘big dish’ project proposed for Queensland. Further details weren’t shared.
