Sopogy targets Europe

Sopogy's recent deal for setting up a 50 MW solar power plant in Spain is part of its focused approach towards buildings its operations in Europe.

Sopogy founder and CEO Darren Kimura told Pacific Business News that the Spanish project, expected to be completed by the end of 2010 and with a cost of about $300 million, is part of the company's plans to expand its presence abroad as the U.S. financial market wanes.

"For about a year now, Sopogy has felt that it's necessary to diversify and become more global," Kimura reportedly said. "Because our technology offers higher production and lower capital costs, we're looking for sites where our technology has the best value, and the best value today lies in the European market."

Last year in an interview with CSPToday.com, Kimura had said, "Sopogy is focusing on distributed generation markets. This translates into many smaller projects in which we use our CSP collectors for power, heat and A/C.   To achieve this, we must ramp our manufacturing quickly, keep our speed to installation cycles short and continue to have excellent quality control thus keeping our customers happy."
