Siemens goes for 28% stake in Archimede Solar Energy

The German company plans to strengthen its offerings for solar thermal power plants.

Siemens AG has acquired a 28% stake in Archimede Solar Energy (ASE) S.p.A., a subsidiary of the industrial group Angelantoni Industrie, S.p.A.

Archimede produces, under licence from ENEA, receiver tubes for thermodynamic solar power plants. The tubes produced by Archimede operate at high temperatures (up to 600°C) and use molten salts.

Siemens, which delivers steam turbine-generators for solar thermal power plants, intends to reduce the production costs for solar power by combining its expertise with that of ASE’s.

The market for solar thermal power plants, according to Siemens estimates, will show double-digit growth rates per year to reach a volume of over 10 billion by 2015.

Gianluigi Angelantoni, President, ASE shared that the construction of a new factory for the production of solar receivers, which is scheduled to be up and running in 2010, will begin before the end of this year.
