SCE emerges as “most solar integrated utility” in US

Southern California Edison (SCE) has once again emerged as the most solar integrated utility in the US, in large part due to its long-standing contracts with the SEGS CSP plants in Southern California.

As per the findings of The Solar Electric Power Association’s (SEPA) 2008 Utility Solar Electricity Survey, SCE’s total of 441 MW represents about 47% of the cumulative survey total.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company and NV Energy are ranked second and third with 229 MW and 78 MW respectively. PG&E’s total is entirely made up of PV installations, while NV Energy’s placing is due to its contract with the 64MW Nevada Solar One CSP plant.

The cumulative rankings are based on the amount of solar installed in all years leading up to and including 2008. No new CSP plants were built in the US in 2008 but existing CSP plants significantly influenced the results.

The other utilities in the top 10 cumulative total solar megawatts list were: San Diego Gas & Electric Co. (49.3); Public Serv. Co. of CO (Xcel Energy) (28.5); LA Department of Water & Power (13.6); Public Service Electric & Gas Co. (13.2); Arizona Public Service Co. (10.6); Sacramento Municipal Utility District (10.2); Long Island Power Authority (7.7).
