Australian town to rely fully on solar power

New solar power facility comprising 54 energy storage towers is being set up in Australia

Cloncurry, a town located in north west Queensland, Australia, is planning to become the state’s first totally solar powered town.

According to news by energymatters, the construction work is scheduled to start later this year. The Queensland government is contributing $7 million to the project, with the remaining $24 million coming from Lloyd Energy Storage and its financiers.

The project developer, Lloyd Energy Storage, has already mentioned that project will involve the construction of a solar energy generation facility on a 10 hectare piece of land in Cloncurry. The facility will comprise 54 energy storage towers (approx . 17 metres high) and an estimated 8000 reflective mirrors that will reflect and concentrate sunlight into blocks containing a graphite thermal storage medium. The plant will utilise a Once Through Steam Generator (OTSG) to produce superheated steam.
