Jordan continues to evaluate the potential of CSP

Jordan is reportedly considering CSP projects in Aqaba and southeastern regions, according to the country’s National Energy Research Centre.

In a report by the Jordan Times, the Centre mentioned that, the terrain of Wadi Rum, a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan, would be best suited to apply the technology, using the cliffs to angle mirrors down to a plant at the surface level.

Ziyad Jibril, director of the Energy Ministry’s renewable energy department, said that the technology is not mature enough for commercial application for the time being, and the cost is too high.

Even as Jordan is contemplating whether to take a plunge or not at this stage, the significance of solar-thermal power generation in the Middle East and North Africa is already growing.

CSP projects are considered in Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Some power plant projects or public tenders have already been undertaken in these countries.
