Daegu City Gas plans domestic solar thermal power plant

Daesung Group is gearing up to build a solar thermal power plant in southeastern Korea.

The group has shared that its main subsidiary Daegu City Gas has been appointed as a manager of the 200kW tower-type solar thermal power generation system development project by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. It is being said that the scale of the 200kW mid- to large-sized solar thermal power generation facilities that Daesung Group is pushing to build is the largest in the country.

As per the information available, "the tower-type plant with 200 kilowatts of generation capacity will be built at a site near the city of Daegu, 302 kilometers southeast of Seoul".

According to a report filed by news.mk.co.kr, Daegu City Gas is looking to invest a total 11.6 billion won (7.15 billion in government investments; 4.5 billion in private investments) into the project over the next three years, working together with DIC, CMS Tech and Mech Tech to develop technology for developing solar thermal power generation with the Korea Institute of Energy Research as its commissioned research institution.

In a developed related to the sector in this region, in August 2007, REC had entered into an agreement to build and own a 2.5 MW solar power plant in South Korea. Through its REC Solar division and its 60 percent owned subsidiary HanBit Solar Co. Ltd. (HanBit), REC had signed an agreement with Daegu City in South Korea to build and own a 2.5 MW solar power plant to produce around three million kWh of clean energy per year.
