These licenses allow all European affiliates of Aventis and Organon to gain access to the molecular biological database, which contains
specific information on gene regulation. This information can aid in the
understanding of complex processes that take place within cells, enhancing the efficient development of new
active agents.

"We have found a true gap in the market here," said Holger Karas, CEO and co-founder of BIOBASE. "The agreements with Aventis and
Akzo Nobel represent a new milestone in our development, which allow us to
significantly expand our customer base in Europe."

Other companies, including SmithKline Beecham, Merck
and Berlex Bioscience (a subsidiary of Schering) have also recently renewed
their TRANSFAC licenses.

The current version of
TRANSFAC Professional, v4.4, contains almost 24,000 entries, providing a reference source for thousands of factors within the field
of gene regulation. The entries include 4,000 profiles of
transcription factors and 10,000 descriptions of their specific DNA binding
sites.

BIOBASE was founded in 1997 by the bio-informatics research group of the
Gesellschaft fuer Biotechnologische Forschung (German Research Center for
Biotechnology).
