Novartis and INVIVO Communications win “Most Valuable Patient Initiative,” with lifestyle and education app

Philadelphia, PE - Novartis and INVIVO Communications staved off stiff competition including Roche, UCB and Bristol-Myers Squibb to win the coveted ‘Most Valuable Patient Initiative’.

The inaugural eyeforpharma Philadelphia Awards reflect eyeforpharma’s mission to accelerate pharma’s transition towards customer-centricity by celebrating the people and projects that are leading the way. This objective is especially evident in the ‘Most Valuable Patient Initiative’ prize that puts the spotlight on projects that improve patient outcomes and care experiences with healthcare providers.

Helio App is a next-generation disease and lifestyle mobile app that supports patients through tracking disease information and motivating them through ongoing treatment. Judges noted that many companies have tried to establish a foothold with these services, but most have failed to maintain engagement and have experienced user drop-offs. Helio App uses gamified rewards, novel interactions and slick visualizations to keep patients engaged, allowing the support to create tangible impacts on outcomes.

The project has focused initially on engaging those with COPD, with successful pilots completed in Brazil, Spain, and the Netherlands. Things look to be expanding quickly for the technology, it will be rolled out across 10 additional countries through 2015, and the team at Novartis and INVIVO are confident that the foundational components of education, feedback and gamification can be across many chronic disease areas. The potential for this to scale was praised by the judges, with Dwayne Dixon of Alcon going so far as to say: “This has the makings of being transformational for how chronic disease can be managed in the future.”

Although in the inaugural year, category winners managed to stand out in a pool of over 80 entrants from across North America. Reflecting the competition’s patient-centric values, patient leaders joined industry executives to assess project value in a competitive judging process.
