What is the Phoenix? The Phoenix is a revolutionary green technology for responsible waste disposal. This zero fuel and non-polluting system can process mixed municipal solid waste at less than half the cost of landfill tipping fees and with a far lower carbon footprint. Measuring only 6' x 13' x 8' (the size of a small van), the current design can dispose of 4 - 8 tons of waste in 24 hours, significantly reducing the need for centralized collection or landfills. The technology can be scaled up or down to be deployed for different applications.
How does it work without fuel? Waste of all kinds - from plastic, soiled paper, polystyrene, organic waste and household rubbish - is thermally degraded using ionized air. Generated through a proprietary process, these highly-energized ions act at a molecular level to produce heat which pyrolysizes and reduces the waste, achieving temperatures of 600-1000 degrees F.
How is it clean and green? A combination of the ionic exchange and the machine's filtration system inhibits dioxins, furans, and other air pollutants so that the gas stream meets or exceeds EPA requirements. The closed-loop filtration system consists of an alkaline water bath that neutralizes any acidity in the gas stream as well as activated carbon filters that trap pollutants by removing particulates, odor and heavy metals through adsorption . Waste is reduced to 4% of its original weight in the form of non-hazardous and non-harmful ashes or char which facilitates significant landfill diversion. This carbon-rich by-product can be reused for many beneficial purposes such as soil amendment or as a concrete filler that can cascade carbon drawdown. The heat from the process can also potentially be captured to generate electricity.
Not limitations, only opportunities. Glass and metal will remain untreated while other waste matter is transformed into carbon ash or char. This feature makes The Phoenix highly complementary to recycling programs. For example, the Phoenix can treat old tires by turning the rubber into ash, while allowing the steel belt inside the tire to be recovered for recycling.
Who are we? Tammy Webb and Yuen-Li Chan partnered to form Phoenix Waste Solutions to bring this breakthrough technology to fruition in order to sustainably and definitively solve the world's trash problem. Webb is a petroleum and geological engineer with over 35 years’ experience as a key player at the forefront of deepwater wells operations technology both in the United States and around the world. Chan, a successful entrepreneur who was responsible for developing the outdoor adventure industry in Malaysia, has also been an environmental activist and educator for the last 30 years. Passionate outdoors women who love to kitesurf, whitewater kayak, mountain bike, rock climb and fish, they were moved by witnessing the effects of climate change in environments they love so much. The duo decided to throw their considerable energies and life savings into developing The Phoenix, both as a technology and also a means of climate resilience. “We are just ordinary people who have simply committed ourselves to fighting for this planet,” they said.
